How-to move Windows Update Services Database (SUSDB)

Hi there !

This blog post will drive you through necessary operations needed to move SUSDB from a SQL Server to another.

1. Stop IIS / WSUS Services / WSUS Server services using the following command in a Command Prompt

2. Detach the SUSDB from its current location

SUSDB_Move1
Right click on the SUSDB / Tasks / Detach…

Select “Drop Connections” and Click “Next”

3. Copy SUSDB.mdf and SUSDB_Log.ldf to the new server

4. Attach database to the new SQL server

Right click on Databases / Attach…

Browse your system to .mdf and ldf files of SUSDB

5. Modify registry to point to the new SQL Server

In the Value box, type [ServerName]\[InstanceName]. If the instance name is the default instance, type [ServerName].

6. Restart IIS / WSUS Services / WSUS Server services using the following command in a Command Prompt

7. Ensure that everything is working starting the Update Services Console.
